On May 24th, 2023, Governor Walz signed the K-12 education omnibus into law, which includes a CS education policy! This 1-page summary includes information about the bill, including the following details of what is included in the legislation. The legislation:
- Establishes a position within the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE) dedicated to supervising and expanding CS education.
- Requires MDE to establish a CS education working group to develop a state strategic plan for long-term and sustained growth of CS education in all Minnesota K-12 public schools and public charter schools and describes the members of the advisory committee.
- Authorizes MDE to implement or sub-contract the development and implementation of high-quality, coordinated teacher recruitment and educator training programs for CS courses and content.
- Allows funds to be used for a variety of activities including high-quality professional learning opportunities for K-12 CS content, travel expenses for teachers attending training, future credentialing, and professional learning.
- Requires that teacher preparation programs leading to professional certifications include grade-level and subject area appropriate instruction in CS.
- Appropriates $4 million for 2024 and 2025 for the Department of Education to use for expenses related to section 1 of this legislation. An additional $4 million is appropriated for STEAM grants focused on after-school programming.
